Tacoma architect Stanley T. Shaw designed this distinctive commercial block in the Italian Renaissance Revival style in 1928, apparently as a business venture for his father, Rev. R. P. Shaw. The building is of variegated brick with five bays across
Shaw Building in 1928, in it's original use as a store.
Mary and Tom Johnson purchased the Shaw building in 1988 and took care to restore and preserve the buildings original character and history.

A Piece of
Tacoma History

Designed by architect Stanley Shaw and built in 1928 in the heart of 6th Avenue Business District, this piece of Tacoma history has been a staple in the local business community. Over the years, this building has been a grocery store, an appliance store, a dance studio, Knights of the Columbus Hall, and for many of the most recent years, the Northwest Costume Shop. 

The newly renamed Ford Center building is now home to Alternative Back Care Physical Therapy and the Avelon Ballroom. We are proud to be able to continue the legacy of community in this space.
